Under Construction were invited to the launch of the The Nelson Trust’s Bridgwater Women’s Centre. The new centre in King Square has been restored by the trust to provide holistic, trauma informed support in a safe, women-only environment. The audience were welcomed by the Chair of Trustees, Dame Janet Trotter, OBE, CVO with the centre officially opened by Police and Crime Commissioner, Sue Mountstevens. In her address, Sue Mountstevens praised the work of The Nelson Trust, how it was ‘essential to the fabric of our society’ to give a ‘voice to women and the power and passion to help themselves’.
Following the official opening, a very brave and inspirational speaker who had previously used the trust, gave us an insight into how the Nelson Trust supported her to turn her life around. It was a long journey but the staff at the Nelson’s Trust did not waiver. CEO John Trolan gave a very emotive speech about the work of the trust, how the achievements are testament to the passion and dedication of the staff team. I do not think there was a dry eye in the house, it was extremely poignant to witness such passion in ones work and how as a leader he values the whole team and the beneficiaries.
A wide range of services will be available, including both practical and emotional help, support in accessing specialist services, one-to-one support, group activities and peer mentoring. The facility also has a crèche, washing machine and café area. Group activities include educational courses, workshops, drop-ins and groups – which cover well-being, life skills and creative activities.
We had the opportunity to tour the facility and everything has been thought of; the donation room is well stocked with essentials from clothes and shoes to toiletries and nappies. The estates team has sympathetically restored the building. This team provides another opportunity for women to get involved – volunteering with maintenance, an opportunity to gain further skills. One wall has been created into a historical feature as its origin dates back to the 1700’s.
Team Under Construction felt truly privileged to be invited to the launch of this fantastic new facility and we look forward to working together in the future.
